Since 2017 UWE Bristol History BA students, Secondary History and Geography PGCE students have worked with teachers from Phendukani High School to facilitate field trips for pupils to Anglo-Zulu war battlefield sites. By collaborating with local teachers, and with support from a UWE Bristol humanities education academic, the students have helped to tell stories from the war from the perspectives of the Zulu Nation. Follow-up workshops back at school enable learners to engage in discussion, role play and appreciation of artefacts, developing their awareness of regional histories and the tourism interest it generates. This collaboration benefits everyone involved, the pupils, local teachers and UWE students.
The university education department has begun work on a Key stage 2 and 3 Geography resource pack called ‘I am Madadeni’ featuring pupils from Phendukani high School, their homes families and lives. This resource will eventually be available online for use by schools wishing to study a contrasting locality. Teachers and pupils from the school have been very excited to participate in generating materials for the resource.
